Remembrance Service for Polish Soldiers

REMEMBRANCE SERVICE FOR THE POLISH SOLDIERS BURIED IN LEOMINSTER MUNICIPAL CEMETERY

Last year on November 27th we held a memorial service for these seven soldiers while also remembering their many compatriots who came to our aid in WW2. The Polish armed forces played a critical role in the early days of the war, especially in the Battle of Britain. Later they fought with us in the Middle East, North Africa and Italy.

Although we organised the event at fairly short notice last year it was very well attended. Polish people, some of whom came from Hereford, were clearly very moved by the occasion.

We plan a similar event this year on Sunday November 26th at 12.30 pm at the site of the graves in the municipal cemetery, (not the Priory churchyard.)

Anyone interested in learning more about these graves and what they represent please get in touch. We could meet to discuss what is known and how we could find out more.

Another idea is to organise a coach trip, possibly next march, to the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. One of the most impressive memorials there is to the Polish Armed Forces and includes a recognition of the part Poland played in Nazi enigma code. On the way back we could visit the superb RAF Museum at Cosford which has a good collection of WW2 aircraft. Entrance to both places is free so the only cost would be the coach journey.
